The Nature of Beauty

“Whoever said beauty was only skin deep wasn’t talking about the nature of beauty, or the beauty of nature.”

It goes way deeper. At Virdance, we believe beauty is experienced by achieving balance, a union between our inner and outer world. The underlying balance of an ecosystem is rooted in biodiversity. The more diverse the array of strengths being devoted to each other, the more resilient and resistant it is to disease and disorder. This resilience equates to value, longevity, protection, vitality and productivity. The absence of disease and disorder is health in its purest form and beautiful to behold. We can sense the rightness of it down to our DNA. As much as we try to separate ourselves, we live among and have depended on a variety of ecosystems for countless millennia. Natural, familial, social, universal – their health and balance cannot be ignored when measuring our own resilience, health and beauty.

The meaning and root behind Virdance is verdancy, or verdant, which evokes images of vitality, growth, and natural abundance.

We incorporated “Vir” as in virility to our name as a commitment to build and protect the concepts we teach. Though virility relates to qualities traditionally associated with masculinity, they are essential in maintaining balance and union among opposites. We can achieve a more sustainable concept of health and beauty by incorporating essential elements of strength, courage, vigor, and assertiveness. Acknowledging and appreciating our imperfections while utilizing the strengths of masculinity and femininity promote well-rounded lifestyle that empowers both genders in self-care and lifestyle.

We need to strive for union more than ever as cognitive dissonance and polarization across wealth, gender and politics has been known to bring down entire civilizations leaving nothing but destruction in its wake. Even in initial stages, we are no longer resilient. We are easily traumatized by anything that threatens our identity, including want for others’ outward successes, youth, wealth and freedom. This leads us to turn our backs on truth to sooth and heal in an incomplete way. It puts us at risk of ignorance, intolerance and apathy. It also sets up a system of artificial escapes that have us glorifying superficial aspects of beauty, sex, travel and wealth as we develop a fear of missing out and unhealthy perceptions of self and modes of competition.

The outward forms of superficial beauty and repair are short-lived and cheap. Most of the time they just cost money but don’t last because we change as humans. Society changes. Cultures change. The environment changes. We work to the detriment of our health to buy topical fixes and pop pills to fix the problems caused by work. We buy more to fill the void caused by social competition. Instead of looking inward for value, we look outward and emphasize what others believe and think about us.

The depths of holistic beauty, health, wellness are long-lived. Wellness that emanates from within your physical foundation and extends outward through mind and spirit manifest through actions. They have an impact on community and the ecosystems that are a part of you, and that you are a part of. Self-care becomes easier. Relationships become more fruitful. Inner tensions reduced, life in general takes a better direction.

Verdance is widely known but not used much outside works of literature about nature or forgotten lands. Its meaning includes many positive traits we value and hope to embody. We hope to use them to bridge the gap between the natural, physical world and the everyday world we live in. It’s often associated with growth, renewal, and the circle of life.

  • Harmony and Balance: Verdant landscapes often represent a harmonious balance between different elements of nature – plants, animals, water, and soil. This can extend to themes of ecological balance and sustainability.
  • Fertility and Abundance: Green landscapes are frequently linked to fertility and abundance, whether in agriculture or in symbolic representations of prosperity and richness.
  • Escape and Tranquility: Verdant environments offer a sense of escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life, providing tranquility and peace. They symbolize a retreat into nature for relaxation and rejuvenation.
  • Hope and Rebirth: The green of spring symbolizes hope and renewal, as dormant landscapes come back to life. Verdancy can be seen as a metaphor for overcoming challenges and starting anew.
  • Health and Well-being: Green spaces are often associated with physical and mental well-being. They offer opportunities for exercise, fresh air, and connection with nature, promoting health and vitality.
  • Cultural and Spiritual Significance: In many cultures, verdant landscapes hold deep spiritual and cultural significance. They are sacred spaces, often associated with rituals, ceremonies, and traditions.
  • Environmental Awareness: In contemporary discourse, verdancy is often tied to environmental awareness and conservation efforts. It highlights the importance of preserving green spaces and biodiversity for future generations.
  • Contrast and Symbolism: In literature and art, verdancy can serve as a contrast to urban or barren landscapes, emphasizing themes of growth and renewal. It can also be used symbolically to represent themes of innocence, youth, or naivety.
  • Connection and Community: Green spaces often serve as gathering places for communities, fostering connections between people and with nature. They provide opportunities for recreation, socialization, and shared experiences.
